Well, today is our last day in Zermatt. We were so fortunate to have sunny skies over the Alps on Saturday, as yesterday and today have not been so nice. We have had rain showers, off and on for both days, but not hard enough to keep us inside. Some of us stayed in town and explored the streets here, while the intrepid hikers took to the trails.
Today, the hikers took the gondola up to Kleine Matterhorn and the Ice Palace. Janis said it started snowing on them as the ascended in the gondola, but stopped soon. She said everything up there was pretty much whited out, so no good views of the Matterhorn today.
They then took the gondola down to Furi, got off the gondola and hiked back to town. They wanted to get off sooner, but there is still too much snow on the ground higher up. I have to keep telling myself that it really is summer. It sure doesn’t feel like it up here. Of course, Zermatt itself is near the 5,000 foot altitude.
I had fun walking down an old street and seeing some of the old buildings. The old houses were built on stilts, of a sort. There are big flat stones between the stilts and the house, to keep out the mice.
Last night we were looking for a place to have dinner. As we walked by this one restaurant, the owner, who looked like Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, came out and beckoned us in.
We did indeed go in, and ordered our meals. The food was traditional Swiss cuisine: Roesti, sausages, cheese fondue. We ordered our meals, and some of us got salads that were served first. Shelora and Janis did not get salads, so this man came back to the table and gave Shelora a cooked small potato, encouraging her to eat it. After she took a bite, he put salt and pepper on it for her.
We were all laughing so hard! Then he gave Janis a potato, also, so that those two would have something to eat while we ate our salads. Our meals came soon after. I had Roesti and Bratwurst. Both were very good, but too heavy a meal for me. I suffered for it last night. But ready for more tonight. Roesti is essentially shredded cooked potatoes with onions and/or cheese, herbs, then this is fried, like hash browns.
My friends are so generous. They gave me a gift certificate for a massage, so I spent one hour getting pampered this afternoon. Now it is almost dinner time again, so we will go out again, and find another good Swiss meal, then we have to pack, as we leave for Zurich in the morning.
It really is a beautiful mountain, but the weather just didn’t cooperate yesterday or today.
It is hard to believe that this part of the tour is almost over. We have had such a wonderful time. I hate to see the trip come to a close, even with the “iffy” weather.
I will try to write again from Zurich.
Auf Wiedersehen for now.
